Warm Mineral Springs in North Port, just south of Sarasota, was long thought to be a sinkhole---until in 1959 Dr. Eugenie Clark of Mote Marine Laboratory and retired Air Force Colonel Bill Royal dived 35--40 feet into its cenote-like cavity and unearthed human skeletal remains and artifacts dating back thousands of years. This underwater "cave" excavation is one of the earliest archaeological finds in the region and offers a rare glimpse into Florida's prehistoric inhabitants.

The plan required a future land use change and rezoning at Tuttle Avenue and Bahia Vista, but the board raised concerns over development intensity at the site.
