Who Pays for Clean Canals? Longboat Key’s $9.25M Fix Explained

Longboat Key just greenlit a $9.25M canal dredging plan—and the way they’re funding it is a model of fairness.

Here’s how the costs break down:

  • 80% comes from homeowners with canal access
  • Fees are based on lifts and docks
  • ~$714/year for many residents
  • Up to $13,000/year for marinas
  • 20% funded through town-wide property taxes

To jumpstart the work, a bridge loan is also in play—giving the town flexibility while public approval rolls in.

Final approval is expected by late 2025.

Smart funding keeps our waterways—and our wallets—balanced.
